Choosing the Right Storage Box Size

In general, the heaviest items should be packed in the smallest boxes. Items should decrease in weight as box sizes increase.

1.5 cubic feet (Small Box)

This is the smallest size of moving boxes for general use. This size is usually used for the smallest and heaviest items.

For instance, this box would be appropriate for books and records. In addition, this size would be suitable for heavy tools or canned goods. A maximum of 65 lbs. can be packed into each box.

3.1 cubic feet (Medium Box)

Make sure to grab a lot of medium (3.0 cubic feet) and large boxes as they are likely to be the most used boxes.

This is great for smaller and heavier items such as small kitchen appliances and lamp bases.

Other items that can be stacked in it include outdoor tools, pots, pans and electronic devices.

You might consider having a parts box ready for your electronics.

4.5 cubic feet (Large Box)

You can use a 4.5 cubic feet box to store clothing that does not hang, larger lamp bases, and lampshades.

The box works well for linens, non-breakable kitchen items like Tupperware, and children's toys.

5.2 cubic feet (Dishpack)

This box is the safest as it is made of multiple layers that make it strong and durable.

Use this box ideally for breakables like any fragile kitchenware, china, and crystal.

It's also great for packing fragile lamp bases and small antiques into. 

6.1 cubic feet (X-Large Box)

The size of this moving box is perfect for storing your lightest and bulkiest belongings.

Items such as coats, stuffed animals, blankets, pillows, and area rugs fall into this category.

24" x 22" x 60" (Wardrobe Box)

These are the largest of the standard boxes. They can be used for stand-up or lay-down packing.

Wardrobe Boxes were made for clothes to remain hanging in the box and are perfect for shipping drapes and curtains.

Having your items neatly folded and hung will help reduce wrinkling during the move.
